Industrial Ergonomic

Ergonomics aren't just for office workers. As a matter of fact, industrial ergonomic guidelines are as important for those who work in a factory setting. These days, many industrial employers have ergonomic workstations for their employees. There are even ergonomic consultants who visit industrial companies and advise them on proper technique for workers in every area. Although industrial jobs vary, many of them involve long periods of standing, work with the hands and heavy lifting.

Industrial jobs range from mildly demanding on the body to very demanding. It all depends on your particular job duties. One thing you'll likely do is stand and walk on hard cement floors. There are insoles for shoes that can help minimize the shock to the joints caused by unsupportive flooring. Also maintaining proper posture is important also. Keep your back straight and your shoulders comfortably back. Arms should hang naturally at the sides. Even if you sit for your job proper posture is a must. Assembly line workers who do their job while seated should use ergonomic chairs if possible and take breaks whenever possible to stand and stretch.

Lifting is another cause of injury in the industrial workplace. Injury can be caused by lifting with improper posture. Always bend and lift with your knees, not your back. Do not twist or swivel your body when lifting. If you are regularly required to lift heavy loads consider a weightlifting belt for back support. Not only can improper lifting cause back problems it can cause other medical issues as well such as hernia. If you think you have experienced injury due to lifting it is imperative to see your doctor and notify your employer.

Industrial ergonomic guidelines such as proper lifting techniques can help reduce injury in some cases but in others the load should be reduced. If you find yourself lifting weight that seems too heavy, investigate alternative methods of completing the job. Most factories these days have equipment like lifts, stackers, hoists and carts to take the majority of the strain off the workers. If you want to learn more about ergonomics where you work, speak to your supervisor or human resources department. They can tell you what is being done in your place of employment to encourage better ergonomics.
