Ergonomic Stand
It is important for laptop and notebook computer owners to understand the importance of using an ergonomic stand and sitting in the correct posture while working. Laptops and notebooks are convenient and portable, however the incorrect use of these devices may lead to health issues like repetitive stress injury or carpal tunnel syndrome to name just two possibilities. However by designing your workstation to be ergonomic and following simple preventative health guidelines you can avoid injury and strain.
The easiest way to make your portable computer more ergonomic is with a stand like the Matias iRizer. This laptop stand is designed to prevent common injuries to wrists and hands associated with laptop use by raising the computer to an angle that is more comfortable and ergonomic for the user. Although laptop style computers have their benefits, ergonomic design is not one of them. The iRizer is made to lock at four different angle heights -- 20 degrees, 30 degrees, 40 degrees or 50 degrees.
One of the best ways to make use of a stand like the iRizer is to attach a separate keyboard and mouse to your laptop and set up a desktop style computer. That way you can better attend to ergonomic details -- for example you can use an ergonomic keyboard, mouse or wrist pad instead of the one that is part of your laptop. Many of these computers has a touch pad mouse which is certainly innovative but not the best for work purposes. A separate mouse and keyboard can make your laptop or notebook workstation much more user friendly.
Whether you're using a desktop computer or a laptop with an ergonomic stand, make sure you're seated in the proper posture. Your back should be straight, shoulders back, with the screen positioned at eye level. When typing, wrists should hover above the wrist pad and elbows should not splay outward. The wrist pad should only be used for breaks in between typing. Another important ergonomic guideline is to take frequent breaks. Get up and stretch or walk around on a regular basis to boost circulation in the legs and make sure to exercise your fingers, hands and wrists. This is one of the easiest yet most effective ways to avoid health problems caused by computer use.
